We know a lot of people turned against Ricky Gervais after this year’s Golden Globes, however; we are not among those people. We don’t care if he had a bad night at the globes. Ricky Gervais is still one of the best comedians of our generation. He is a legend and his televisions shows are as witty as they are laugh out loud funny.

Which is why we are excited to see his new series Life’s Too Short when it premieres tonight on HBO at 10:30 pm. We cannot wait to see what Gervais and Steven Merchant, who was one of the co-creators and producers of The Office (the original UK series which the US version is based off of), have in store for tonight’s premiere.

We fell in love with this series during the hiatus and cannot wait for it’s return. We cannot wait to see what Game of Thrones has planned for season 2.

Today HBO released the poster for season 2 of Game of Thrones, which simply states “War is Coming.” The statement, simple. The implications, vast. We cannot wait to see what Game of Thrones has in store for us when it returns to HBO on April 1st.

We absolutely love Revenge. We love the soap opera juicy drama, we love the fake action sequences, we love Emily, we adore Victoria, we wish Nolan was our partner in crime, we love Sammie, even though he should be dead, and we love the love triangles (Jack/Emily/Daniel and the best one of all Nolan/Tyler/Ashley).

However, there are seven things about Revenge we just cannot stand. Seven elements we could do without. Seven things we hope Revenge edited out of their show during their hiatus or made improvements on. Seven things we don’t want to see when Revenge returns tonight from their hiatus.

So before tonight’s episode we thought we would share the seven things we absolutely hate about Revenge, the show we cannot live without.

Revenge: The Seven Things We Absolutely Hate about Revenge the show we cannot live without

1. “This is a story about Revenge”

Every episode and then multiple times during the episode Revenge reminds us of Emily’s intention to get revenge.

Revenge, we got it. This is “not a story about forgiveness. It’s not like anyone thinks Emily is going to have a change of heart and request she go into mediation with the Graysons so she can learn to forgive everyone. It’s not like we expect Emily and Victoria to hug it out after doing trust falls exercises.

Emily is out for Revenge. We don’t need to be reminded of this fact every episode.

In fact, the word Revenge is in the title. No one is confused about the premise of this series. So please stop reminding us this is a story about Revenge.

2. Slow motion shots

We’ve learned to live with and even appreciate Victoria and Emily’s evil stares. However, do we really need to see them in slow motion? The answer to that is no, we don’t.

In fact, there is hardly anything about this series that we need to see in slow motion. Victoria walking in slow motion, hair in the wind, is getting old. Emily staring down her enemy in slow motion is tiring. And the slow motion runs after a dramatic action with the Revenge signature music, even worse.

Stop with the slow motion. We get it, the show is dramatic. We want to see it play out in real time, not in slow motion. One slow motion sequence every couple of episodes, is alright. But multiple times an episode, way too much.

3. Little Amanda Clarke and Jack Porter

Don’t care for them. Cute kids, cute actors, but every second we waste with little Amanda and Jack is a second Revenge could devote to their way hotter adult counterparts.

We want to see the love triangle where it’s at now. Give us more Daniel/Emily/Jack drama. Don’t waste our time with more Jack and Amanda grainy footage of their youth drama. This is not a Nicholas Sparks movie, this is Revenge.

We don’t care how or why Jack and Amanda used to be in love, how Jack got Sammie, how Jack and Amanda used to run on the beach. We don’t even care about little Amanda learning about double infinity with David Clarke or the love affair he had with Victoria that Amanda apparently witnessed.

Plus every time we see little Jack and Amanda we are reminded how improbable it is that Sammie lived this long and we start to worry that Sammie may not make it through the season. That’s not fair to us or Sammie.

Live in the now Revenge. No more little Amanda and Jack.

4. Flashbacks in general

In fact lets not just stop at little Amanda and Jack, let’s limit the flashbacks in general. Revenge you all are using them way to much and they are just distracting.

If we have to watch David Clarke get carted off by the police one more time we swear we will lose it and go red sharpie on this series. We’re sorry he went to jail and little Amanda had to watch it go down, we’re sure she replays the moment in her mind over and over, but do we really need to be subjected to it one more time?

In addition, we realize at this point Emily is going after people who screwed over her Dad. We don’t need the back story. We don’t need Emily to watch trial footage to get it or hear lines from her dad’s diary.

Just write Emily a couple lines where she explains to Nolan why she is going after the person she’s targeting in the episode and call it a day.

Bonus, if you have Emily fill in the gaps verbally with Nolan it will mean more screen time for Nolan. That’s a win win. What Revenge fan doesn’t want to see more Nolan?

5. The Black Wig

Amanda’s juvie wig is just bad. Really bad. The fact that you all pretend Nolan didn’t recognize her because she went from black to blonde even though he’s a technological genius was a low moment for the series.

Stop pretending Emily dramatically changed her appearance before returning to the Hamptons. She just went from black to blonde.

That black wig is just a bad wig. It’s ugly. Stop using it. Stop forcing Emily Van Camp to wear it. She’s too pretty for that wig.

6. Declan and Charlotte

Young love is so cute, but this is not Gossip Girl. This plot is just distracting from the main plot.

We only care about Declan when he is encouraging Jack to go after Emily. We only care about Charlotte because we found out she’s Emily’s half sister. Love Connor and Christa, great actors, but just like Little Amanda and Jack, we could live without them.

And Declan’s accent. Wow… so bad.

7. Weak Ashley

Speaking of accents, let’s go to Ashley. Our favorite little British frenemy.

We love her but you all do nothing with her. We are tired of watching Ashley pouting. Empower her. Make Ashley as evil as Victoria and Emily. Did she learn nothing from her summer job with Victoria.

Why does she have to team up with someone to go after Emily? She doesn’t need Tyler or Victoria to undermine her best friend. She works in PR and High Society. We’re sure she’s well verse in backstabbing.

Let Ashley loose on the series. Let her go all Tyler crazy. Let her set it off. Stop making her into a meek little creature. Ashley got the job with Victoria, which means she fought off stiff competition and proved herself with her boss, let’s see what this girl can do.

We’re tired of waiting in anticipation for Ashley to turn on Emily, we know it’s coming so make it happen. Let’s actually see Ashley go after Emily, let’s have an epic show down. Let’s see Ashley stand on her own and show us what she’s got.

Love Revenge but we hope they’ve made some course correction when it comes to these seven things. Can’t wait for Revenge’s return.

Revenge returns at 10/9c tonight on ABC. Will you tune in?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock you’ve probably heard NBC’s new show Smash is premiering tonight at 10/9c.

Every critic, blogger, newspaper, magazine has reviewed and dissected this series. At this point, we know Smash’s greatest strengths and weaknesses.

Most critics expressed their undying love for Smash and characterized it as Glee, all grown up. Most of the reviews we’ve seen have come to the same conclusion, Smash is much more than Glee, it’s more intelligent, tells a better story and uses music in a unique and original way and as a result the end product for Smash is much better than the end product for Glee.

Most of the critics are wrong. Glee and Smash both rely on song and dance but that is where the comparison should and do end.

We’re not sure why most critics felt a need to discuss Glee at length when discussing Smash since the shows are very different. In fact, we are saddened by many critics decision to use Glee as a jumping off point to discuss Smash, we think such reviews turn people who don’t like Glee away from Smash.

We think most critics took the wrong approach when reviewing Smash. They reviewed on a surface level and allowed the Glee comparisons to prevent them from giving Smash a in-depth review the series deserves.

No critic, magazine and newspaper writer, journalist, celebrity journalist (yes there is a difference), has really been able to capture in words what Smash is truly about.

Smash’s Behind the Scenes promo- Smash’s preemptive strike to convert potential skeptical viewers in to loyal dedicated audience members

Recently we uncovered a Behind the Scenes Smash promo (video seen below) which features Smash’s cast and crew discussing the series. The cast and crew do a great job answering in advance any questions a potential Smash viewer who is skeptical about the series may have.

The best advocates for Smash seems to be the incredibly talented cast and crew of Smash. No one seems to capture in words what Smash is about than it’s own cast and crew.

We’ve decided to skip the review and let Smash’s cast and crew, who passionately and unequivocally back their series, lay out their best case for why you should buy in to the hype surrounding the series and save a space in the DVR for Smash when it premieres tonight on NBC.

See the Smash behind the scenes promo here:

A (fake) interview by a potential Smash viewer who believes (due to critic reviews) Smash is Glee for adults with the Cast and Crew of Smash (using quotes in the promo seen above)

Potential Smash Viewer Question: Ok I’ve seen the 100 promos, commercials, seen the pilot, read the articles and reviews but I still don’t know what Smash is about. So what is Smash about?

Answer: Debra Messing (Julia Houston): “Smash is about two actresses who are battling for the role of a lifetime.”

More information: The role is the title role of Marilyn Monroe in a Marilyn Monroe Broadway musical created by Messing’s character Julia and Christian Borle’s character, Tom.

Potential Smash Viewer Question: Why do they need to battle it out? Can’t the producers and directors just decide who gets the part? Where’s the point of conflict in this series? What creates the drama?

Answer: Katharine McPhee (Karen Cartwright) [The question Smash poses is] “do you take your chances with the newcomer or do you go with the veteran?”

More information: McPhee’s character, Karen, is the new kid on the block, Megan Hilty’s character, Ivy, is the veteran actress who Tom, who created the musical with Julia, handpicked to play Marilyn. Derek, the Director played by Jack Davenport, sees Karen’s potential and fights on her behalf. Tom is fighting for Ivy.

Potential Smash Viewer Question: How will Smash decide who ultimately gets the role of Marilyn? Is this yet another show about mean girls who get into cat fights? How will the girls battle it out?

Answer: Katharine McPhee (Karen Cartwright): “You got to dance better, you got to sing better, you got to act it better to have one chance of standing in the spotlight.” Ie: No cat fights on Smash. Talent will decide the winner.

Potential Smash Viewer: How will the story unfold on Smash?

Answer: Christian Borle (Tom Levitt): “One of the most exciting aspects of the show is that the story is told by music. “

Potential Smash Viewer: Yet another show where we get to see actors/musicians remake and mash up hit songs and do artist tributes. Again what makes this show different than everything else on tv?

Answer: Christian Borle (Tom Levitt): “I don’t know where else on television you’re going to find original songs every week.”

Potential Smash Viewer: Original songs? I know a show which used the original song approach in a couple episodes. You’re not really original.

Answer: Anjelica Huston (Eileen Rand): “They (Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman- Executive Producer/ Lyricists and Composer) seem to be a kind of bottomless pit of talent. They come up with at least two original songs per episode.”

Potential Smash Viewer: An original song every episode. Alright. But why would I want to hear songs about Marilyn Monroe’s life?

Answer: Jack Davenport (Derek Wills): “If you’re going to do a musical about Marilyn Monroe they better be good songs. And they’re killer.”

Potential Smash Viewer: I’m going to be subjected to really “killer” songs about Marilyn Monroe. I thought this show was about the two actresses battling out. Tou’re saying the characters will take musical breaks to sing Marilyn Monroe songs and then get back to the plot?

Answer: Megan Hilty (Ivy Lynn): “[No] these songs make sense within the story and they drive the plot forward.”

Potential Smash Viewer: And that means what?

Answer: Marc Shaiman (Executive Producer- composer of Smash’s score): “What we’ve discovered is were really making a musical of the characters on Smash. The musical that their writing of Marilyn Monroe becomes just a conduit. Most of the songs just end up speaking to what is going on with the characters emotionally.”

Potential Smash Viewer: Again, how is this different than the other musical show on television?

Answer: Craig Zadan (Executive Producer): “We set out to do something that no series has ever really done before. We’re creating piece by piece this musical about Marilyn Monroe.”

Potential Smash Viewer: Smash is a Broadway musical on TV?

Answer: Jack Davenport (Derek Wills): “[No] they [the writers, lyricist and composer of Smash] really are sort of writing a musical in tandem with the show.”

Potential Smash Viewer: Smash is a musical within a musical on TV? If I hate Broadway theater I will hate this show?

Answer: Christian Borle (Tom Levitt): “You don’t have to be familiar or even in love with the world of theater to appreciate what we are trying to do here.”

Potential Smash Viewer: It’s a show about a Broadway musical which you expect me to love even though I hate musicals?

Answer: Craig Zadan (Executive Producer): “Smash is not an inside show that if you love broadway or love theater you’ll like the show and if you don’t you wouldn’t be interested. Smash above everything else is about stories everybody can relate to. “

Potential Smash Viewer: Stories are fun and all but the show is essentially a musical within a musical? I hate musicals and I think I will hate musicals within musicals even more. If I’m not a theater geek or groupie I don’t know what you expect for me to find appealing about this show?

Answer: Megan Hilty (Ivy Lynn): “I’m not a doctor but I loved ER. It’s not about medical procedures its about the drama that’s going on all around it.”

Potential Smash Viewer (appeased by Megan’s wit and charming personality): Touche Megan. Loved ER. But can Smash really deliver the drama ER delivered? I want it to be filled to the brim with drama.

Answer: Neil Meron (Executive Producer): “There is so many moving parts [in Smash] its like doing an action film but instead of action sequences you have musical numbers.”

Potential Smash Viewer: Normally I would say you can’t really replace action sequences with musical numbers but since you have Spielberg as an Executive Producer on the project I’ll give you a temporary pass. We will revisit this later in the season.

Alright then, if you had to boil Smash down to it’s core what would it be about?

Answer: Neil Meron (Executive Producer): “ At the very end of the day it is a show about wish fulfillment. “

Potential Smash Viewer: Huh?

Answer: Katharine McPhee (Karen Cartwright): “It’s about dreams and about how no dream is too big.”

Potential Smash Viewer: Alright, well that sounds warm and fuzzy. What is you’re final pitch, why should I watch this show? Why will I fall in love with Smash? Why should I make space for it on my DVR?

Answer: Jack Davenport (Derek Wills): “Who doesn’t enjoy watching extraordinarily talented young people do something difficult really well?”

Potential Smash Viewer: Your answering my question with a question?

Answer: Jack Davenport (Derek Wills): Hell Yeah!

NBC’s Smash premieres tonight at 10/9c on NBC. Will you watch the series? Tell us in the comments.

Normally we are turned off by politics. We vote and we will occasionally engage in some discussions about political issues, but the never ending parade of Republican debates and the 24 hour news medias relentless coverage of Congress and the President is exhausting.

We are not, however; turned off to HBO films. When HBO announced it was making the best selling novel, Game Change, into a series and had casted Julianne Moore to play Sarah Palin we knew the film would be one of those can’t miss films that would have everyone talking.

In the trailer HBO convinced us Game Change has Temple Grandin potential. This is the type of movie that is sure to have Emmy and Golden Globe buzz. Julianne Moore’s portrayal of Sarah Palin is so convincing, so authentic, so real it’s scary. We appreciate that Moore does not dumb Palin down. It’s clear Moore was committed to showing multiple dimensions of Palin.

Ed Harris’ portrayal of John McCain is equally transformative. Woody Harrelson who plays Steve Schmidt, McCain’s advisor, seems to rise to the occasion and deliver an award commanding performance.

From what we can tell from the 1:47 minute trailer for HBO’s Game Change the network has struck gold again. We expect Temple Grandin size buzz for Game Change come award season and we cannot wait to tune into to see what the movie has in store when it premieres on March 10th.

Here at TV Fiends we are reality TV Junkies. We love watching trashy reality televisions shows. However, we’ve also had an issue lately with our DVR filling up way too quickly. The 97% full warnings have deterred us from taking on new series.

As much as we were initially interested in the CW’s new reality show, Remodeled, we did not feel we had the space or the time to take on another reality TV series. We figured we could watch the series on repeat or on Hulu.

Then we saw a clip from this week’s episode of Remodeled (shown below) and we realized the show is the type of reality tv series we could not miss. When we saw the clip from this week’s episode we knew Remodeled was a hidden reality tv show gem. Paul Fisher is dynamic.

Remodeled is a series centered around modeling expert Paul Fisher. On the series Fisher and his witty and well dressed assistant Joseph travel around the country to small town agencies. His mission is to bring all these agencies together to create a super agency called The Network and revolutionize the fashion world.

In many ways Paul Fisher reminds us of Tabitha Coffey, star of Bravo’s hit series, Tabitha Salon Takeover.

Like Tabitha, Paul travels around the country to struggling businesses, in his case small town agencies, berates them and is brutally honest with them about why their agency is not up to snuff.

Like Tabitha, Paul has what we like to call “bulls**t intolerance.” He doesn’t care for excuses or detailed explanations. He just cares about producing good results.

Paul essentially tells the agency why their agency has failed and teaches them what they need to succeed. In Paul’s words he “teaches” the agency he’s dealing with that they “know nothing.”

The we reason why we fell in love with Tabitha and make space for her Bravo series on our playlist is the same reason we are now falling in love with Paul and have made space for Remodeled on our playlist. We love that Paul, like Tabitha, is blunt, to the point and genuine. He’s real and he is not afraid to give it to you straight. Paul is unphased by people’s tears or temper tantrums. Paul and Tabitha both share the same “don’t mess with the bull, you’ll get the horns” approach to leadership.

There is something about Paul’s soul crushing, to the point, in your face, but for your own good style of mentorship which draws us in to Remodeled like a moth to a flame. Paul Fisher intrigues us and we love seeing him inflict his style of leadership and command on others.

After seeing some clips and going back to the last couple of episodes we knew we had to make space for Remodeled in our DVR this week.

We love Pretty Little Liars and our love for the series has not faded. However, since Sutton has returned to The Lying Games we’ve secretly been obsessed with the series.

For those of you who don’t know the premise of The Lying Games here’s a summary, it’s essentially Switched at Birth with twins. The major difference between The Lying Games and Switched at Birth is the twins are reunited and then Emma takes Sutton’s place (i.e. a Parent Trap twist).

Emma takes Sutton’s place as Sutton goes off to look for their biological mother so she can figure out why the girls were separated at birth to begin with and didn’t know of each other’s existence until Sutton secretly uncovered it.

While Sutton was away playing Nancy Drew and attempting to get answers, Emma was forced to pretend like she was Sutton and was not suppose to let anyone in on the switch-a-roo routine.

Emma had adjustment issues taking on Sutton’s role. This was mostly due to the fact that Emma grew up in the foster system in poverty without parents and made the life choice to be the lemons out of lemonade, sweet as pie type of girl. Sutton, in contrast, grew up rich, spoiled and was a queen bee mean girl.

When Emma took Sutton’s place she decided to keep her sweet as pie attitude, claiming she was a “new Sutton” a “Sutton who turned over a new leaf.” She rebuilt bridges Sutton purposefully burnt. She made amends with a lot of people and repaired many of Sutton’s broken relationships.

In addition while Emma was playing Sutton, Emma decided to borrow a couple of Sutton’s things. Emma borrowed Sutton’s friends, her clothes, her tennis career and her boyfriend Ethan.

When Sutton returned at the end of the summer season we learned Sutton has an issue sharing and playing nice. In typical mean girl fashion Sutton reclaimed her life, much to poor little Emma’s dismay, and attempted to go back to evil as usual.

The only problem was Sutton could not reclaim some of the most precious items she lost when Emma took over. She discovered her friends and family fell in love with the “new Sutton” aka Emma and so did her boyfriend, Ethan (the only person who realized Emma was not Sutton).

Sutton’s inability to reclaim her thrown has driven her down a path of destruction. She now wants to destroy the same long lost twin she used to be desperate to reunite with and unmend all the fences Emma mended while she was away.

During the summer season on The Lying Game Sutton was occasionally seen and barely heard. This season Sutton’s taken over the series by storm. The entire winter season is centered around Sutton’s attempt to reclaim her queen bee throne.

The major issue for Sutton is that in less than a season she went from being the fairest one of all to being the Evil Queen. She’s used to winning popularity contest. Now she’s forced to compete in a popularity contest with an identical twin no one but her ex-boyfriend knows exists.

Sutton’s mean girl on a mission vibe managed to peak our interest in the series. We love the energy Sutton brings to the series. We love the friction between separated at birth twins Emma and Sutton. We love the love triangle of Emma, Sutton and Ethan. We love how Sutton is already destroying the close and tender relationships Emma built with Sutton’s adopted sister Laurel (seen in the clip below), her family and her friends.

We love everything about evil, self-destructive Sutton. We also love watching Emma try to compete with Sutton while attempting to appease her enough so Sutton doesn’t expose her and have her ship back to foster care.

In addition we cannot wait to see Emma’s inevitable Rolling into the Deep meltdown where she snaps and faces off against Sutton in what is sure to be a vicious show down.

Sutton is heating up The Lying Game with her spunky, sassy energy. We know Sutton will bring out the worst in Emma and we are excited to see the juicy drama that develops when Emma snaps.

We can’t wait to see what Sutton has up her sleeve this season. We also can’t wait to see Emma’s defensive moves. The series is at a boiling point and we love souping up every little delicious detail.
