Tonight HBO premieres their new series, Luck, at 9/8c. We had a chance to see the early preview of the series and we have to say Luck is a show which has potential. It’s not great yet, but we think it could become great.
At times the viewers may get lost in the race track rhetoric of Luck and the plot seems to drag on, but the show’s redeeming factor seems to be the heart pounding, breath catching racing sequences, which draw the viewers in and are shot with so much attention to detail that you cannot help but feel you are actually there at the race track.
Luck seems to rely on these intricate racing sequences as well as their all star cast, which includes Dustin Hoffman and 2012 Academy Award Nominee Nick Nolte, to get this series off the ground. The pace of the series is slow and steady. In the first episode we got the sense that the writers of this series are building something great. However, the series seems to be in the pre-construction phase and not the model home phase, which makes it hard for viewers to invest in the characters and the storyline.
The question on everyone’s minds is will the audience stick around while Luck gets its feet on solid ground. HBO viewers have a lot of faith in the network. Rightfully so. HBO has delivered some of the best dramas of our generation. It has yet to be seen if Luck will follow in the footsteps of those dramas or fall flat.
We personally have a good feeling about Luck. However, with so much pulling at the audiences attention we are not sure if Luck will get the audience to invest in the series and capture their attention week after week. We’re not sure if Luck will have the ratings the show needs to justify a second season.
Will the audience learn to love this series? Will HBO give Luck a green light to continue if the audience doesn’t fall head over heels immediately? Only time will tell.
