The biggest mistake Saturday Night Live made last night was to choose Jason Segel to host over the Muppets. We love Jason Segel, don’t get us wrong, but the Muppets stole the show for us last night.
Jason Segel’s monologue was the impetus for the Muppet takeover of Saturday Night Live. In the monologue he was joined by the Muppets who expressed their shock and horror in song over Saturday Night Live’s decision to let Jason host over them. The monologue became an Inception moment for us. Once the idea was planted in our head we couldn’t enjoy the remainder of Jason’s performances. Sure he was great, but the Muppets are, well the Muppets. They are hilarious and iconic.

Having Seth and Kermit do Weekend Update’s Really!?! segment together only made matters worse in our opinion. Once we saw how good Kermit was we could not help but think, “we can’t believe the Muppets aren’t hosting SNL!” Kermit was brilliant in that segment. So brilliant in fact that even Seth lost his composure at times. Seth, like us, was star struck by Kermit, who was laugh out loud funny during that segment.

We kept wondering why Kermit and the rest of the Muppets didn’t get more airtime during last night’s Saturday Night Live episode. All night we were distracted. We kept looking for another Muppet to pop up. When they didn’t show up we could not help but feel disappointed.
We love you Jason (yes the Kissing Family Thanksgiving sketch was hilarious) but by the end of the night the only “really!?!” question we had was why Lorne Michael’s chose Jason over the Muppets. Maybe the Muppets could not be in every sketch but we want to see them more than once or twice.
In fact, we would have been satisfied if they just co-hosted with Jason, dividing responsibilities. Unfortunately, Saturday Night Live is not as open minded as they pretend to be. Clearly they take issue with having animals host the show and have a preference to humans (by the way where was Animal? We missed him last night too).
We have our theories as to why Lorne choose Jason over the Muppets. One involves Lorne’s secret disapproval for the illegitimate nature of Kermit and Miss Piggy’s relationship. Another involves Lorne secretly harboring feelings for Miss Piggy. Either way, we know Miss Piggy is some how entangled in that mess. That girl is always at the center of everything. All we know is that the Muppets stole the show on last night’s episode of Saturday Night Live and when all was said and done we wanted more of them, not less.
Next time the Muppets show up for Saturday Night Live don’t tease us Lorne. If you are going to have the Muppets show up, use them.
What did you think of this week’s Saturday Night Live? Do you think Jason Segel pulled it off as host? Do you think the Muppets were unjustly denied the right to host? Don’t hesitate to sound off in the comments below.
