On Friday, Oprah announced that she would reveal a big family secret on Monday’s show. Today we learned that Oprah, the Queen of talk and our idol, has a half-sister, named Patricia.

Oprah revealed on her show that Patricia was given up for adoption by her mother in 1963 while Oprah was away living with her father.

Patricia, Oprah’s sister, knew that she was related to Oprah since 2007, but did not come forward with the information and did not go to the press. Oprah did not learn of her sister’s existence until October of 2010. Oprah said she and her sister met for the first time on Thanksgiving and spent the holiday together. Oprah praised Patricia for never taking her story to the media. Patricia in response said it was family business and she did not want to expose the news in that way.

Oprah and Patricia, discussed their brother Pat on the show, who died in 2003. Pat went to the tabloids before his death and revealed that Oprah had gotten pregnant at 14 but lost the child. Oprah told her sister and the audience that Pat’s decision to go to the tabloid caused a rift between them but says that she now realizes that Pat’s decision allowed her to let go of the shame she held onto over her pregnancy.

Oprah also told the viewers that her mother had been harboring some shame over the decision to give up Patricia for adoption but she told Oprah to let that shame go

Oprah and Patricia told the audience that they are still trying to adjust to the news that they are sisters but they are trying to process the news and trying to make time to get to know one another.

We have to say we are shocked to learn that Oprah has a sister. We are even more shocked to learn that Oprah’s sister knew about Oprah all this time and did not say anything. We wish both of them the best.
