One of the things we love most about the new Hawaii Five-0, you know besides Daniel Dae Kim, is that the episode inevitably ends in a chase or in some cases shootout scene and a hand to hand combat scene with Alex O’Loughlin, who plays Steve McGarrett.
There are three things that we can usually count on during the final chase/shootout scene on Hawaii Five-0. One, a chase or shootout where none of the cast of Hawaii Five-0 get hurt even though they are pursuing dangerous criminals on foot and/or getting shot at. Two, Steve McGarrett usually ends up in hand to hand combat and comes close to death but will narrowly escape it by sheer force, quick thinking and/or clever maneuver. Three, Dano or Alex will end the scene with a snarky or witty comment to one another or to the criminal.
During this week’s final chase scene we got to see all three elements work in perfect harmony. Steve, Danny, Chin and Kono had to split up and chase down four criminals on bikes. Each member of the team found a unique way of comprehending their fleeing criminals. Danny used a cooler, Kono used her gun and followed it up with a witty “rides over” comment, Chin used a hose and knocked the criminal off his bike and Steve decided to go a more direct route and tackle the criminal off his bike.
The four criminals and four methods of capturing them made the scene compelling to watch. The Hawaii Five-0 final chase scene during this week’s episode also had our three elements:
- Chase scene with all four members of the team, none harmed.
- A hand to hand and knife combat scene with Steve where he escapes death.
- A witty comment by Steve, “how does that sand taste,” to the criminal to finish out the scene.

This chase scene was one of our favorites all season because all four team members played a prominent and active role in it. The scene also had the hand to hand combat scene we learned to come to expect and Steve’s line, “how does that sand taste,” was one of our favorite wittiest comments at the end of a chase/shootout scene all season.
We doubt that Hawaii Five-0 can top that final chase scene next week but we will tune in to find out.
