Brothers and Sisters: Scotty cheated on Kevin, affair details and Kevin's secret revealed
Last week we said that we expected this week’s episode of Brothers and Sister’s to be memorable. Luckily for us, Brothers and Sister’s did not disappoint. The episode focused on the aftermath of Scotty’s big revelation to Kevin that he cheated on him (if you missed the reveal moment where Kevin learns that Scotty cheated watch it here).
This week we learned all the details about Scotty’s affair. Last week answered the what, that Scotty cheated, this week we discovered the who, when, why and where. We also learned that Kevin lied to Scotty about where he was the night Scotty had his affair.

We were surprised that Brothers and Sister’s decided to give us all the information about Scotty’s affair this week. We were sure that it would take weeks to learn all the details of Scotty’s affair but the show gave us all the information last night.
Here is all the details we learned about Scotty’s affair during last night’s episode of Brothers and Sisters:
Who: Marcus

What: Scotty Cheated
We learned that last week. If you missed it read about the moment where Kevin learned that Scotty cheated here.
When: After Scotty’s restaurant opening.
During this week’s episode Scotty revealed to Justin and to Sal that he cheated right after the restaurant opening. The restaurant opening took place about two months after the car accident that eventually took Robert’s life and a couple weeks after Scotty and Kevin’s surrogate lost their baby. In this week’s episode and last week’s episode Scotty confirmed he only cheated one time.
Why: Scotty did not feel like a priority to Kevin and Kevin told him his restaurant may not work out.
Scotty took responsibility for his affair completely during the episode. However, the episode seemed to indicate that one of the underlying causes for why Scotty got to the point where he made the decision to cheat was because he did not feel like a priority to Kevin and because Kevin did not believe in him or his restaurant dream.
Kevin did not attend Scotty’s restuarant opening. Kevin told Scotty he had a business meeting (more on that later). In the morning Kevin said it was important to attend this meeting over Scotty’s restaurant opening because the restaurant may fail. Kevin told Scotty that his dream of having a successful restaurant may not pan out and said that it may fail just like their attempt to have a baby. Scotty was clearly hurt.
In walks Marcus who, as Justin put it, told Scotty everything he wanted to hear from Kevin but didn’t. Marcus believed in Scotty’s vision when Kevin didn’t. Marcus told Scotty that he was “clearly a culinary superstar” and then went on to say “with that face you should probably have your own reality show.” Marcus said the right thing at the right time. Scotty was vulnerable and Marcus was there and in the end Scotty cheated.
Where: Not in Scotty and Kevin’s bed
We did not get all the details about where Scotty had this affair. We did get the impression that Marcus and Scotty had drinks after the restaurant opening and had their affair somewhere in the restaurant. However, Scotty did mention to Kevin that he did not have the affair in their bed.
Kevin’s big revelation, the reason Kevin was not at Scotty’s restaurant opening:
During the flashbacks to the infamous night when Scotty had his affair with waiter Marcus, we saw Kevin acting cold, withdrawn and distant towards Scotty. Later we learned more about the who, what, when, why and where concerning Kevin on the night his husband had an affair.
Who: Was Kevin with if he was not with his husband?
We have to say when Kevin revealed to Nora that he was not where he told Scotty he would be during the restaurant opening, i.e. at a meeting with a partner, we thought he may have been having an affair as well. But that was not the case. Kevin was with a bartender at a bar at the time.
What: Drinking
Kevin decided to drink instead of attending his husband’s restaurant opening, knowing that it was suppose to be the most important day of Scotty’s life and after Scotty begged him to be there.
When: During the restaurant opening and apparently after the opening
Kevin never showed up to Scotty’s restaurant opening and decided to drink the night away instead. He received a call from Scotty begging him to show up but instead of leaving and running to Scotty’s side he decided to stay at the bar.
Kevin must have been drinking late because he did not walk in on Scotty and Marcus having a drink after the restaurant opening or catch Scotty and Marcus in the act.
Why: Kevin was dealing with issues
Kevin was drinking because he was dealing with a lot of issues. Kevin lost one of his best friends, Robert, in the car accident that was featured in the Brothers and Sister season finale last year. At the time, Robert was in a coma and was brain dead. Kitty was keeping Robert alive through life support but everyone, including Kevin, knew that Robert was not going to make a recovery.
Kevin had just lost his baby as well. Kevin and Scotty’s surrogate miscarried and Kevin was devastated.
Kevin could not deal with the issues and refused to open up to Scotty. Kevin decided to drink to cover up the pain.
Where: We think we’ve covered this but just so it is clear Kevin was at a bar and not at a meeting or at his husband’s restaurant opening.
Why we did not like the Kevin was at a bar plot:
We have to say we did not like the Kevin was at a bar not a meeting plot because it made it seem like Scotty’s affair was completely reactionary to Kevin’s bad behavior. As a result of this plot line, Kevin looked like a callous jerk who lied about where he was and blew off the most important night of Scotty’s life. Meanwhile Scotty came off as someone who is not perfect, made a mistake, confessed to it and tried to make it right.
We understand that the writers wanted to convey the message that why someone cheats is complicated, that it is not so black and white, and that marriages are complex. However, we think there was a better way to do that. We think the writers could have gotten their message across without making Kevin look like such a complete jerk.
Favorite Kevin and Scotty Scene:
One of our favorite scenes of the night occurred when Kevin and Scotty fought about the affair. In the scene Kevin expressed anger at Scotty for cheating and Scotty told Kevin he was not perfect, that he makes mistakes.

We loved how vulnerable Scotty and Kevin were in this scene. We thought Kevin’s line where he said, ”I’m not angry, I’m in pain, and you put me here. The person who was suppose to love me more than anything… You were suppose to be better than this,” was powerful. We also thought Scotty’s reply that “I’m not [perfect]. I’m just as lost and damaged and screwed up as the rest of you. I’m not perfect Kevin, I am not perfect,” had power as well. It revealed Scotty’s frustration with the fact that he is perceived as superhuman and incapable of making mistakes.
In one of the last scenes of the night we discovered that Kevin decided to move out of his house with Scotty. At the end of this week’s episode Kevin was featured on the phone with Scotty surrounded by moving boxes.
UPDATE: Kevin did not move. He is just staying with Kitty. The moving boxes that surrounded Kevin during his phone call belong to Kitty, not Kevin. Kitty announced that she was moving back to her home at the end of the episode. We’d like to thank our readers for bringing this to our attention. We thought it was a little early for Kevin to be packing up and heading out.
UPDATE to the update: In the first couple minutes of the next episode Brothers and Sister, Sarah told Kevin that if he did not like Kitty’s place he could always move back to his place. Kevin did not permanently move out but did live with Kitty for a couple of weeks.
Kevin also took his mother’s advice and revealed to Scotty that he had been drinking at a bar during the restaurant opening and was not actually at a meeting. Unfortunately, we did not hear the entire conversation or Scotty’s response to his husband’s move and his secret. Hopefully, we will learn more about it on next week’s episode.
We are not sure where Scotty and Kevin will land after this. We hope they don’t succumb to what Sarah called “the Walker curse” and divorce, however; we are not sure how the couple will come back from this. We will have to tune in to Brothers and Sisters next week and and see what happens.
